A stroll through the public square of any city is enough to see the importance of shoes—it is difficult for a man to walk a few yards without being accosted by a shoeshine boy! Moroccan men are very particular about having clean, well-shined shoes, and even sneakers are neat and clean. Moroccan women, even those dressed in djellaba and hijab, often choose to wear heels.

Moroccans rarely wear shoes inside the home, where another type of shoe, the bilgha, is used. These backless leather slippers come in a variety of shapes and colors and are worn around the house and outdoors (a recent innovation is an “all-terrain” rubber sole). The men’s classic style is yellow and pointy-toed while women can choose from an array of colors and designs. In some households, plastic sandals replace the bilgha for indoor wear.
